Nigeria Boko Haram 'Hundreds' attack Maiduguri - 14 March 2014
On entering the city, the attackers split into smaller groups - heading for the barracks, the university and an area where civil servants live. "They set many houses on fire and killed innocent people," one resident told a local newspaper. Militants suspected to be from Boko Haram have killed 500 people this year. Local residents say there was a heavy exchange of fire near Giwa barracks, as the military tried to fight off the insurgents. Air force jets were seen flying over the city following the dawn attack. "There is thick smoke billowing. The assailants are hurling explosives into Giwa barracks and the multitude of soldiers inside the barracks are firing back," local resident Hamisu Musa told the Daily Trust newspaper. Suspected Boko Haram fighters detained by the military are often held at Giwa barracks - human rights groups say hundreds have died there and torture there has been rife. The army has denied mistreating suspects. There was also at least one explosion at Maiduguri university and houses were hit, residents say. It is not clear whether the blasts were set off by Boko Haram or whether they were the result of strikes by the air force. BBC Nigeria correspondent Will Ross says Boko Haram militants usually attack at night so this was a particularly brazen assault. Attacks have intensified in recent weeks despite a state of emergency being declared in north-eastern Nigeria last year. Boko Haram was founded in Maiduguri in 2009. It wants northern Nigeria to become an Islamic state. [Breaking News] Nigeria attack Students shot dead as they slept, College of Agriculture, YOBE
The students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory at the College of Agriculture in Yobe state. North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamist insurgency by the Boko Haram group. Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria's government to create an Islamic state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools. Casualty figures from the latest attack vary, but a local politician told the BBC that around 50 students had been killed. The politician said two vanloads of bodies had been taken to a hospital in Yobe's state capital, Damaturu. A witness quoted by Reuters news agency counted 40 bodies at the hospital, mostly those of young men believed to be students. College provost Molima Idi Mato, speaking to Associated Press, also said the number of dead could be as high as 50, adding that security forces were still recovering the bodies and that about 1,000 students had fled the campus. A Nigerian military source told AP that soldiers had collected 42 bodies. The gunmen also set fire to classrooms, a military spokesman in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, told Agence France-Presse. The college is in the rural Gujba district. In May, President Goodluck Jonathan ordered an operation against Boko Haram, and a state of emergency was declared for the north-east on 14 May. Many of the Islamist militants left their bases in the north-east and violence initially fell, but revenge attacks quickly followed. In June, Boko Haram carried out two attacks on schools in the region. At least nine children were killed in a school on the outskirts of Maiduguri, while 13 students and teachers were killed in a school in Damaturu. In July in the village of Mamudo in Yobe state, Islamist militants attacked a school's dormitories with guns and explosives, killing at least 42 people, mostly students. Boko Haram regards schools as a symbol of Western culture. The group's name translates as "Western education is forbidden". Boko Haram is led by Abubakar Shekau. The Nigerian military said in August that it might have killed him in a shoot-out. However, a video released last week purportedly showed him alive. Other previous reports of his death later proved to be unfounded. Read More: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-24322683- published: 30 Sep 2013

Suspected Islamists kill 90 in Nigeria village raid: witnesses For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to http://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Suspected Islamist fighters killed at least 90 people in an early morning attack on a village in remote northeast Nigeria on Sunday, witnesses said. The Boko Haram gunmen surrounded the village of Izge, near the border with Cameroon, spraying it with bullets, setting off explosions and burning down dozens of houses, they said. "As I am talking to you now, all the dead bodies of the victims are still lying in the streets," resident Abubakar Usman told Reuters by telephone. "We fled without burying them, fearing the terrorists were still lurking in the bushes." Borno state Police Commissioner Lawal Tanko confirmed the attack but said he had no details of casualties. Another witness, Lawan Madu, said hundreds of residents had fled. President Goodluck Jonathan ordered extra troops into northeast Nigeria in May to try to crush the insurgents, who want to carve a breakaway Islamic state out of largely Muslim northern Nigeria, where they have killed thousands of people. But the Islamists simply retreated into the remote, hilly Gwoza area bordering Cameroon, from where they have continued to mount deadly attacks that increasingly target civilians. Jonathan faces an election in a year's time, and the persistence of Boko Haram's 4-1/2-year-old insurgency despite an costly military operation against it remains a major headache. Last week, Boko Haram fighters in trucks painted in military colors killed 51 people in an attack on the Konduga local government area. Terrorist group Boko Haram attack military base in north-east Nigeria
Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/itnytsub Terrorists from the Islamic group Boko Haram have attacked an air base in north-eastern Nigeria. Authorities have released little detail about the attack and have not said if there were any casualties. A military spokesman only said that security forces had repelled attacks by "daring terrorists". The Nigerian government has since imposed an 24-hour curfew in the area, near Maiduguri. In May, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital, and two neighbouring states that are also targeted by Boko Haram. He also declared an all-out offensive against the group, who are fighting to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria. Thousands of people have died since Boko Haram's insurgency began in 2009.
